The First Ninety Days
of Following Jesus

The early weeks of following Jesus shape a great deal of what comes after. Not because God is impatient, but because habits set quickly and are far easier to build than to rebuild. If you have recently given your life to Christ, here is what we would want you to hear.

Start with what is settled

Before you build anything, understand what is already done. You were not accepted because you performed well this week. You were accepted because Christ died and rose, and you trusted Him. That does not fluctuate with your mood or your record.

New believers often spend the first months anxiously checking whether they are still saved. Settle it now. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Everything else grows out of that ground.

Four habits worth building straight away

None of these are complicated. All of them compound.

  1. A daily wordTen honest minutes in Scripture beats an hour you cannot sustain. Start in one of the Gospels and read it through before you go anywhere else.
  2. Honest prayerTalk to God in your own words, in your own language, about what is actually happening in your life. Fluency is not the point. Frequency is.
  3. A Sunday you protectBeing in the room with God's people every week is not a rule. It is how faith stays warm. Guard it before the diary fills.
  4. One person who knows youFind someone further along who can answer your questions and notice when you go quiet. Growth happens fastest where somebody is paying attention.

What can wait

You do not need to have an opinion on every disputed doctrine by Christmas. You do not need to serve on four teams. You do not need to be able to explain the whole Bible to your family before you have read it yourself.

Peter wrote about desiring "the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2). Milk first. There is no shortcut past the beginning, and no shame in being at it.

Expect it to be uneven

Some weeks will feel like flying. Others will feel like nothing at all. Both are normal, and neither is the measure. The measure is whether you are still walking, and God is far more patient with slow progress than we are.

If you have recently made this decision and you do not know where to start, speak to one of our pastors. Nobody should have to work out the first ninety days on their own.

"May the work God has begun in you be carried on to completion, and may these early days lay a foundation that holds for a lifetime."
