Angels are among the most talked about yet least understood beings in Scripture. The Bible presents them not as sentimental figures but as real, powerful servants of God, sent to carry out His will and to minister to those who will inherit salvation.

When the angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, Scripture records that he was "sent from God" (Luke 1:26). Angels are messengers, dispatched on assignment. The writer of Hebrews puts it plainly: "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14).

What are angels?

Angels are created spirit beings, greater in power and might than men, yet servants of the living God. They do not act on their own initiative but on the command of the Lord. Everywhere they appear in Scripture, they are working: announcing, protecting, guiding, delivering and strengthening the people of God.

How angels minister to us

Scripture describes a wide and practical ministry of angels in the life of the believer. These are some of the ways they serve God's people:

1. Physical careThey minister to the physical needs of God's people, as they did for Elijah under the juniper tree and for the Lord in the wilderness.
2. ProtectionThey are charged to protect the saints from their enemies, keeping them in all their ways.
3. DeliveranceThey rescue the saints from peril and danger, as Peter was freed from prison.
4. DirectionThey give guidance on the steps to take, directing the servants of God at key moments.
5. A hedge around usThey form a protective hedge around believers, encamping around those who fear the Lord.
6. Help in prayerThey assist in bringing answers to prayer, as Daniel discovered when his words were heard from the first day.
7. EncouragementThey strengthen and encourage God's people in seasons of fear and weariness.
